The great dog trainers that I have known seem to posses an intuitive understanding that the only way to reach something higher is to focus their attention on the multitude of the seemingly insignificant, unimportant, and boring things that make up dog training.
Those mundane and tedious little things that, when done exactly right, with the right kind of attention and intention, distinguishes every great trainer from those mediocre counterparts who are satisfied to simply get a result. I believe that our training results can provide us with a mirror to see ourselves as we are, to see what we truly know and what we don't know, to see ourselves honestly, directly, and immediately. Therefore seminars are about producing results not simply "how to do it."
I guess we all know that seminars only work if we put the hard work in ourselves. My seminars are about an idea that says your dogs training results are nothing more than a distinct reflection of who you are. If your thinking is sloppy, your training will be sloppy. If you are disorganised, your training will be disorganised. If you are greedy, your people around you will be greedy, giving you less and less of themselves and always asking for more. If your information about what needs to be done is limited, your training will reflect that limitation.
So, if your training results are to transform - you must transform first. If you are unwilling to change, your dog will never be capable of giving you what you want. The first change that needs to occur is to really understand your dog and what it takes to make him work. Once you fully understand the relationship every owner must have with his or her dog, if it to work, I can assure you that your results will take on a new meaning and expression.
I believe that this is the way it honestly works, and until we address the above dog training problem, we will always be a reflection of a saying that most of us have heard:
What is the one thing that two dog trainers can agree on? What the third dog trainer is doing wrong.
